"My Roommate" ( () () () TBA) is Chapter 37 of the Ao Ashi series, written and illustrated by Yūgo Kobayashi and based on a concept by Naohiko Ueno. This chapter was published in the 50th issue of Big Comic Spirits' 2015 series.

Summary[]

Ashito, Tachibana, and Ōtomo dedicate themselves to improving Ashito's "First Touch" through late-night training sessions after practice. However, Ashito's fatigue becomes apparent, prompting Coach Nozomi to warn him against overworking if it affects his performance. Togashi unexpectedly covers for Ashito when questioned about the late practices, and later, Taira suggests Ashito could learn from Togashi’s strong fundamentals. Inspired, Ashito considers asking Togashi for help, only to find Togashi already willing to teach him the true mechanics behind "First Touch" and receiving the ball.

Synopsis[]

The chapter begins Ashito Aoi, Sōichirō Tachibana, and Eisaku Ōtomo helping Ashito understand the mechanics behind the "First Touch" in football as well as teaching Ashito how to do it properly. The Trio does this same practice for Ashito every night after practice for the next week working incredibly hard. However at practices, the consequences of practicing for hours shows as Ashito is fatigued throughout practices. Coach Nozomi Date notices this and yells at Ashito for his terrible posture and being so tired in the middle of practice. Ashito attempts to apologize but ends up falling asleep for a few seconds while standing up. Coach Nozomi tells Ashito to not get carried away with his individual training and that he will have to stop that training if it becomes a hindrance to Ashito's performance in practice. As Ashito looks on towards the field, he sees the rest of his teammates, especially Jun Marchs Asari and Kanpei Kuroda, practicing and says to Nozomi that if he trains normally, the rest of the players will continue to exceed Ashito's abilities and if he practices harder, he will eventually catch up to them.

Chapter 37 Taira compliments and gives advice to Ashito

Taira compliments Ashito's determination and says that results are starting to show form his individual training. He then tells Ashito he should try asking advice from Togashi.

Coach Nozomi says that the Dorm Mother told him that three people have been sneaking out of the dorms (Ashito, Tachibana and Ōtomo) at night and only returning after lights-out hour but she could only see the shadows of the people. Nozomi says that Ashito better not be the person sneaking out for practice and calls out to Ashito's roommate Keiji Togashi to confirm if Ashito was sneaking out. Togashi pauses and internally reflects on everything he has seen from Ashito including his phone call home as well as the late-night practices with Tachibana and Ōtomo. He then surprises Ashito by covering for him by saying that he wouldn't know if anyone was sneaking out because he was already asleep.

During a break in practice, Taira Nakamura walks up to Ashito and tells him that Ashito is slowly but surely catching up on his "First Touch," and says that Ashito's special training is slowly getting Ashito results. He goes onto say that Ashito is still too stiff in his movements and has a lack of precision with his weak foot and says that Ashito needs to put in the work to not be a hindrance on the others. However, Taira surprises Ashito with a bit of advice. He says that even though Togashi and Ashito has a major gap in the basics of football, Togashi is special. Taira says that Togashi may be a bit rough and huge, he was scouted unlike the rest of the players, but his foundation of basic techniques is strong and he is able to use his head properly. He says that Ashito should ask Togashi for help as well.

Chapter 37 Togashi offers to train Ashito

Togashi offers to train Ashito and show him the true meaning and theory behind Receiving the Ball and the "First Touch"

Later that night, Ashito cancels practice with Tachibana and Ōtomo saying that Nozomi warned him and Ashito wants to keep a low-profile for a while. He says that Tachibana and Ōtomo should get some rest as they all have been pushing themselves for a while. As the two walk-off, Ashito returns to his room and considers asking a sleeping Togashi for help like how Taira recommended but decides against it as he does not want to waste Togashi's time. As Ashito is about to leave, Togashi suddenly wakes up and says that Ashito has been working super hard and its been nice for him to have the room all to himself. However, Togashi also says that he has noticed that Ashito has had a look of panic in his eyes where if he so much as stumbles, Ashito will fall apart. Togashi says that Ashito needs someone to reign him in, but Ashito refuses and says that he is completely fine and has no such look. Togashi then laughs at Ashito for how weird and interesting he is and says to Ashito to train with him tonight so Togashi can show Ashito the true meaning and theory behind the "First Touch" and Receiving the Ball.
