Main Story[]
Itsuki Nagano first appeared in the tryout match as part of the Esperion's Youth team. Given that coach Tatsuya Fukuda shuffled the original positions of all his players, Nagano played as a forward.[1] He scored the last goal of team Esperion.[2] The final result was 4-1.[3]
During one of the training practices, Nagano complained that Ashito's technical skills were low, but he was calmed down by Taira Nakamura.[4] A few days later, Nozomi Date proposed a training in which the only way to the goal was through passing. He teamed up with Roan Mino, Shūto Kuwata and Yoshihide Nakagawa, and observed how Ashito showed up his recent progress in his receiving skills.[5]
Nagano was chosen a starter player against Seikyō High as a center-back.[6] During the half-time, Esperion was losing 3-0, and Nagano and Taira pointed out how badly the team was playing, specially the left flank with Jun Marchs Asari, Kanpei Kuroda and Ashito.[7] Nagano almost received a yellow card for complaining to a rival that was mimiking an injury after being fouled by Nagano.[8] Esperion ended up wining 4-3.[9] He was also seen celebrating with the team afterwards.[10] Nagano was again a starter player against Kurume Daiichi High.[11] Esperion won that match 3-0.[12]. After that match, he got promoted to the A-team alongside Taira, Kuroda and Asari.[13]
Nagano was with Taira when he witnessed Ashito asking Nagisa Akutsu to teach him defense.[14] In a later training, specifically devoted to double purpose of adapting Ashito to the full-back position and to adapt Akutsu to the forward position (as a replacement for the recently injured Kenta Yoshitsune)[15] Nagano had a chance to shoot a corner kick from Tōji Kobayakawa, but Ashito intercepted the cross.[16]
Nagano was chosen to be on the bench for the match against Kashiwa Dai Business High.[17] He did not have any chance to play in that match, though, despite being considered as a possible replacement for Taira,[18] who got injured at the end of the first half.[19] In the next days, he continued training in the group of the reserve players of the A-team.[20] He also asked Aki Tsukishima for advice.[21] He was again placed in the bench for the match against Tokyo Vans.[22] He did not play that match either, though Fukuda considered him as a suitable replacement for Masanori Baba. However, Nozomi Date convinced him to sub in Eisaku Ōtomo instead.[23]
Nagano was visibly affected when Taira Nakamura announced his retirement and tried to convince him otherwise with some other teammates.[24] In the match against Funabashi Academy High, Nagano was again placed in the bench.[25] He did not play that match.
Nagano was chosen as a regular for the J-Youth Cup eight-final match against Iwata Allegrio in the midfielder position.[26] After that match, he went for dinner with other teammated of his same age. Namely Akutsu, Eita Takasugi, Yōichi Kiriki, Kunitaka Matsunaga, Osieck Mino and Makoto Shimizu. He was also chosen to be a regular in the quarter-final against Ganon Osaka as a midfielder.[27] Esperion lost that match 5-1.[28] He also played in the match against Funabashi that the latter won with a goal from Sammy Rufin.[29]
Nagano was again placed in the bench for the match against Aomori Seiran High.[30] He did not play that match but celebrated the title with the rest of the team.[31] Some days later, when Esperion won the Takamadonomiya Cup against Ganon Osaka (which Nagano did not play, at least not at full), he participated in a dinner with his teammates and other staff members.[32]
As a result of winning the Takanodomiya Cup, Esperion was invited to the Alkass Cup in Qatar. Nagano was placed in the bench in their first match of the tournament against Barcelona FC.[33]
