Ashito Aoi ( (あお) () (あし) () ; Aoi Ashito) is the main protagonist of the Ao Ashi series and a supporting character in its spin-off, Ao Ashi: Brother Foot. Ashito is currently a first year high school student and a member of Tokyo City Esperion FC.

Appearance & Personality[]

Ashito is a fit teenage boy of fairly average height. He has curly, brown hair and brown eyes and is usually seen in his Esperion uniform when on the pitch, or in his school uniform or an Esperion jacket when off it.

Initially, Ashito is a brash and naive kid from a remote prefecture called Ehime. As an aspiring player who has dreams of becoming the world's greatest forward, his personality is considered self-centered, arrogant, selfish and scoring focused, which can be defined by his playstyle when first joining Esperion. However, that is shattered quickly when not only is his position changed, Ashito realizes exactly how much he lacks in technique and football knowledge in comparison to the rest of his peers. But instead of falling into despair, he acknowledges his setbacks and asks anyone to help him move forward, showing his eagerness to learn and drive to better himself. This quality is admired by others, especially by fellow 1st year teammate Sōichirō Tachibana.

Ashito is stubborn, sometimes violent, determined, headstrong and refuses to go down without a fight, as shown when he gets into altercations with the promoted players Jun Marchs Asari and Kanpei Kuroda on the first day of school. As someone who loves football, he can get dangerously obsessed if not kept in check, as noted by others. This is especially evident in the Funabashi match, where he attempts to cast aside his support system—including Hana Ichijō and Noriko Aoi—in pursuit of new heights in football, disregarding the care and concern others have for him. But as stated by his mother, Ashito is someone who also understands and needs people, in order for him to consistently outdo himself every time he is playing on the pitch. He has a high emotional intelligence as he strives to understand his teammates both in and outside of football.

Though Ashito is a tough and outwardly resilient player, his confidence falters when facing peers like Trepone Rufin and Ren Kitano, who are already world-class. He may even reveal a hint of an inferiority complex. Yet, as always with football, adversity doesn't discourage him; instead, it fuels his excitement to tackle new challenges and drive his relentless pursuit of improvement.

Skills & Abilities[]

Eagle Eye[]

Ashito can see the position, body orientation, and location of nearly, and on some occasions, every player in the field. Thanks to this, he can simulate their projected path. As stated by Anri Kaidō, his ability is to remember the positioning of players on the pitch and predicting their next movement. He can also determine the spaces his opponents wish to use, and identify where his teammates would want or need him to be at, making him a great playmaker.

Photographic Memory[]

Combined with his wide vision, Ashito can remember the entire match to a stunning degree, which greatly helps in his development as a player since he can figure out what play he did right or wrong, how he did it and the events that lead up to it, as well as its effects on his and the opponent's team.

Scanning[]

A habit he learned from his respected senior Kuribayashi, he is able to gain more information such as which players are around him. This is also to ensure he performs his plays correctly and is able to link up with teammates and their actions while in possession of the ball. An example of this in use is when Ashito first utilized it, he is able to instantly execute a long pass towards a forward moving up the field before other players even realize what happened. This information gathering, when used in conjunction with his eagle eye and photographic memory, allows for more advanced plays as the match progresses, furthering his development as a playmaker.

Trivia[]

  • Etymology: The name Ashito means "reed" (葦) (ashi) and "person" (人) (to). His surname, Aoi, means "blue, green" (青) (ao) and "well, mine shaft, pit" (井) (i).
  • Even though based on Atsuto Uchida (former right back of Kashima Antlers, Schalke 04 and Japan football national team), Ashito is more similar to Yuto Nagatomo, a right-footed left back, who is also from Ehime like Ashito.
