Ao Ashi (アオアシ) is a Japanese seinen sports manga series written and illustrated by Yūgo Kobayashi and based on a concept by Naohiko Ueno.

It first started serialization on January 5, 2015[1] in Big Comic Spirits, a weekly Japanese seinen manga magazine published by Shogakukan. From April 30, 2015,[2] it has then been re-published as a series of tankōbon volumes.

Shogakukan Asia began publishing the series in English on November 30, 2020.[3] From March 17, 2022,[4] the Japanese manga has been re-published as a series of Shinsho volumes, titled "Ao Ashi: Junior Version."

Ao Ashi has been adapted into an anime series by Production I.G, as well as a series of novels and stage plays.

Plot[]

Ashito Aoi is a young, aspiring soccer player from a backwater town in Japan. His hopes of getting into a high school with a good soccer club are dashed when he causes an incident during a critical match for his team, which results in their loss and elimination from the tournament. Nevertheless, he catches the eye of someone important who happens to be visiting from Tokyo. That person is Tatsuya Fukuda, a coach for one of the top J-League club's youth team, aka Tokyo City Esperion FC. After spending time with Ashito and teaching him a few tricks, he sees potential in him and invites him to the selection tryouts.

Hopeful that his dream is not all lost, Ashito makes his way in the big city to continue his path toward becoming pro.

Junior Version[]

A new "Junior Version" of the Ao Ashi manga series was published on March 17th, 2022. The content is the same as that of the original version of the Ao Ashi manga series, only adding furigana for the text, and including pages of bonus color articles for people to "read to get better at soccer."

New covers are designed for the Junior Version manga series, and the series is in Shinsho format (新書判) (103x182mm or 4.1"x7.2"), which is narrower than the B6 size (128x182mm or 5.0"x7.2") of the original version.
